Ever wondered if you could turn into a zombie? Looks like you can. While a person cannot rise after death, he can block out his emotions just as the zombies which we see commonly movies. What drug has this effect? An over-the-counter medicine component called acetaminophen does.
A study has revealed the surprising nature of acetaminophen. According to this research, this drug can make one less empathetic. This element which is a part of medications such as Tylenol can switch off one’s ability to feel pain.
What Does This Study Reveal?
Researchers at Ohio State University found out a shocking side effect of acetaminophen. The study carried out was published in the Journal Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience in 2016. As part of the study, a group of 80 college students was divided equally into two.
The first group was given 1000 mg of acetaminophen while the second one was given placebo. All the participants were given sad stories to read after which they were asked to rate the emotional pain they felt.
Results showed that the first group which had been given acetaminophen rated the pain low in comparison to the second group which gave high ratings. This revealed that the drug had made participants less emotional.
For the second round, 114 students were again divided into two groups one of which was given acetaminophen while the other received placebo. All of them were then exposed to up to 105 decibels of white noise, blasts of which lasted 2 to 4 seconds.
They were then asked to rate how unpleasant the sound was. Outcome showed that those who had received acetaminophen found the noise comparatively less troublesome than the other group. Hence, acetaminophen was noted to have a zombie-effect on users.
Other Side Effects Linked To Acetaminophen
Acetaminophen has been called a dangerous compound. The use of it can make one less compassionate, a quality that can cause disturbance in his social and personal life. Other than reducing one’s ability to sympathize and empathize, this drug has also been linked to other health concerns.
This drug may cause damage to one’s liver and cardiovascular health. It can increase the risk of having a heart attack. Hence, the medical industry is favoring natural routes to relieving pain. This shows that several OTC drugs have been allowed by pharma without a proper evaluation of the negative side effects that may accompany.
To sum up, acetaminophen can be harmful for not only one’s physical but also one’s emotional well-being. A study shows how it can make one less emotional. Previously, the drug component has been associated to liver and heart problems.
Yet, acetaminophen is used as a component for several OTC drugs. This shows that the medical field doesn’t take into account how certain drugs can take a toll one’s health rather than improving it. That being said, choose natural procedures and products for treatment over drugs.
