What Did This Study Reveal?
A new study carried out by the Food and Drug Administration shows that the skin of avocados can be home to harmful bacteria. For the study, FDA tested a big batch of avocados and found after analyzing the skin of all 361 samples that 64 had listeria on them.
Of the 1254 pulp samples, 3 had listeria in them. What’s more, when all the samples were tested, pulp and skin ones, 12 of them had salmonella. Both of these, listeria and salmonella, have the ability to cause several illnesses. Though the percentages are low, it is crucial to do your best to reduce any risks.
The best you can do in this regard is wash the avocados before chopping them and scooping out their pulp. Since fruits and vegetables come into contact with several surfaces that can transfer dirt and pathogens onto them, it is necessary to give them a wash before use.
