New Study Looks At How Omega-3 Fatty Acids And Vitamin D Supplements Impact Heart Health

A New Research work looked at the role that vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids played in decreasing death risk due to cardiovascular disease.

This ongoing VITAL research work that comprises of 26,000 male and female participants found that taking omega-3 fish oil supplement could substantially reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. It also found that vitamin D didn’t have any effect on heart health.

Findings Of The Research – Fish Oil And Vitamin D For Heart Health

Scientists found that those people who consumed less than 1.5 servings of fatty fish per week gained the most benefit. However, the director of the trail, Dr. JoAnn Manson also told Healthline that “it’s not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ answer.”

While some people are going to benefit more, others may not. Those who do not have a lot of fish in their diet can benefit more from fish oil. Regarding the use of vitamin D, researchers noted that it didn’t have any impact on cardiovascular health, but it did reduce cancer mortality. Since vitamins don’t have any influence on heart health, it is crucial to control other risk factors such as hypertension, cholesterol, diabetes, etc.

For those who developed cancer despite the consumption of vitamin D, their mortality risk was lowered by 25%. However, this benefit was only noted in participants who were of an average weight. Those who were obese didn’t get this benefit. If you are taking vitamin D supplements though, make sure you are consuming safe doses. At the end of the day, both vitamin D and omega-3 supplements should be taken after consulting your doctor.
