New Study That Shows the Link That Social Media and Well-Being
A new study which has been published in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology shows that social media usage shares a link with depression and loneliness. The experiment involved 143 individuals who were randomly divided into two groups.
One of these groups was enabled to use social media as it normally did while the members of the other group were made to decrease their daily social media usage by 30 minutes. The group was not required to entirely ditch social media as that would not have been an accurate representation of today’s world where social networks have become an integral part of everyone’s life.
The results showed that the latter group was able to notice a reduction in the symptoms of depression and loneliness. The outcomes of the study concluded that social media usage was linked to anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, problems with self-acceptance, poor sleep quality, and loneliness.
Other Studies on the Link Between Social Media and Mental Health
Previously as well, it was observed that social media usage shared a link with depressive symptoms. However, this new study is the first one that establishes a casual link between social media usage and poor mental health. Another recent study shows that excessive use of social media can result in an increase in narcissistic traits.
