New Research Shows That Drinking Carbonated Drinks After Strenuous Physical Activity Can Damage Kidneys

Many of use immediately resort to guzzling down a cold soft drink after weight-lifting or another similar physical activity. However, this is not something that we should do. Because not only are fizzy drinks that are high in fructose content notorious for their health-damaging impacts, but also because of what a new research has revealed about drinking carbonated drinks immediately after exercising.

A new research shows that drinking a carbonated drink following a workout session can damage your kidneys. This study, which was carried out by researchers at the University of Buffalo, New York, has been published in the American Journal of Physiology—Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology.

For research purposes, 12 physically fit participants of about 24 years of age were examined. These individuals spent 30 minutes jogging on the tread mill after which they were made to do three tasks that were like physical toil on an agricultural site for 15 minutes. Following these 45 minutes of activity, participants were given 15 minutes of relaxation and 16 ounces of a popular high-fructose, carbonated drink.

This pattern was repeated four times. Then after a week, this 4-hour experiment was repeated but this time instead of being given carbonated drinks, they were given water. Measurements of the participants’ weight, BMI, body temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure were taken before, after, and 24 hours following the routine.

Results showed that participants who had taken soft drinks had risen levels of creatinine and a lowered rate of glomerular filtration both of which represent AKI. These participants were also slightly dehydrated and had upped markers of vasopressin which can increase blood pressure. This shows that consuming soft drinks following exercise can interfere with kidney functionality. Note that more research is needed to know about the long-term impacts of carbonated drinks on the health of exercisers and to confirm these claims.
