Multiple advertisements and other forms of media say that dark chocolate is not only an indulgent food but one that is healthy. It has been applauded for containing flavanols which can improve cardiovascular function and antioxidants which can fight off free radical damage. However, since the COSMO study has not come a conclusion yet, it cannot be said with conformity whether or not dark chocolate can benefit one’s heart health.
What Does The COSMO study Say?
Dr. JoAnn Manson who is a professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School and also a part of the COSMO study told Healthline that dark chocolate is not a healthy food. She stressed that the content of cocoa flavanols differs from bar to bar. What’s more, not only is the flavanol content of a particular chocolate unknown, chocolate is also high in sugar, calories, and saturated fats.
Mason also says that while the outcome of the Cocoa Supplement and Multivitamin Outcomes Study may favor cocoa flavanols for the role they play in reducing the risks of cardiovascular events, nothing can be said yet. The study’s results will be out in 2021 and for now there is no evidence that cocoa flavanols can reduce the risks of heart attacks, stroke, etc. Hence one shouldn’t consider dark chocolate a particular source of healthy content and must only indulge in it in moderation.
Dark Chocolate Side Effects
Dark chocolate has always been praised for its many health benefits. So much so that people have come to take chocolate as more than just an addiction. They have started to believe that dark chocolate can be their source of flavonoids and antioxidants and is actually just healthy. However, there is a dark side to dark chocolate too.
Consuming too much of it can lead to weight gain. After all, it contains a lot of calories. Hence, it is best to be moderate when it comes to the consumption of the loved snack. Dark chocolate can also mess up with your sleep. Why? Because it contains caffeine. It can also give you severe headaches, in particular, to those who have migraine attacks. However, several people think that dark chocolate does not induce headaches.
Dark chocolate can also be housing mycotoxins. These refer to toxins that are produced in mold. But the toxins in dark chocolate are in very low a quantity to actually be damaging to health. Only those who have very sensitive systems may notice any negative side effects. Moreover, dark chocolate contains oxalates which can up the risks of kidney stones as oxalates can cause urinary oxalate excretion.
Dark chocolate may not be as helpful for health as people have come to believe. In fact, the many health benefits of dark chocolate as advertised might just as well have promotional reasons behind it. This is because the COSMO Study is still underway and there is yet no evidence that says that cocoa flavanols can improve cardiovascular health.
