So many of us think that drinking juice is a great way to incorporate fruit into our diet. It is hassle-free, tastes delicious, and fits into your routine easily as well. And since we’re talking about 100% fruit juice which supposedly lacks additional flavors, preservatives, and other additives, we’re drinking nothing but pure fruity goodness, no? Unfortunately, no.
Fruit juice even with the 100% natural label is not as healthy as you may think it is. In fact, it is loaded with a huge quantity of calories and boasts a high sugar content. All the many nutrients found in the drink cannot make up for its excessive sugar and calorie content.
Is 100% Natural Juice Natural?
Typically, fruit juice companies are not being honest with you when a big “100% natural” reads front center on the packages of their product. Because when this fruit juice is extracted, it saved for up to a year in tank that is oxygen-depleted. This makes it lose its flavor which means additional flavors have to be mixed. The product thus delivered to you is not pure.
Moreover, some low-quality juice are so bad in terms of quality that they are just flavored water with a load of sugar and no fruit at all. Not to forget, fruit juices can never deliver the same fiber content that whole fruit can. What’s more, the sugar content of juices is almost as high as that of a soft drink such as Coca Cola.
Is freshly squeezed juice as healthy as fruit itself?
You’d think that if you squeeze out juice from a whole fruit yourself, you’d be intaking less sugar and the fresh drink prepared would be just as healthy as fruit itself. You’re wrong here again. You see, the fruit’s skin and pulp are normally left behind in the making of fresh juice. These two hold a lot of fiber and this fiber content is lost in fruit juice.
Over and above that, when you eat fruit, you consume fiber that is combined with the natural sugar of the fruit. This enables better and slower sugar absorption. This slowly collected sugar is used by the body directly as energy. However, when you drink juice, your blood sugar levels rise instantly which makes the body convert this sugar into fat and glycogen following insulin release.
Juice, since it is liquid, may also make you eat more which can cause more calorie intake. On the other hand, chewing limits eating and is more fulfilling. Apart from this, the pulp and the skin contain a lot of nutrients which are left behind when you squeeze the fruit into juice.
Packaged fruit juice is unlikely to be healthy because of its addition of sugar, artificial flavors, etc. Freshly squeezed juice is a better option but still not as healthy as whole fruit because of its sugar content, and lack of fiber and nutrients. If you’re someone whose body opposes sugar and calories, you may want to avoid fruit juice and stick to fruits.
