Among the many types of waters present out there today, one is Alkaline water. This type of water is believed to bring along many health benefits. However, is it really healthy? Or is the hype for nothing?
What Is Alkaline Water?
The pH scale measures from 0 to 14. A pH of 1 indicates that a substance is very acidic whereas a pH of 13 is considered very alkaline. 7 is a neutral pH and the pH of regular water. Alkaline water is that which has a slightly alkaline nature with a pH of 8 or 9.
Not only does alkaline water have a higher pH but it also contains alkaline minerals and a negative oxidation reduction potential. This means it is more antioxidizing. For these reasons, many believe that alkaline water can neutralize the acids in the body and offers other health benefits too.
Alkaline water can be natural or processed. Processed alkaline water is made through a process called electrolysis whereas natural alkaline water is one which has a raised alkaline level as it passes through rocks and collects alkaline minerals. Alkaline water can also be made at home.
Health Benefits Of Alkaline Water
Advocates of the drink say that it boasts anti-aging properties. They also believe that it can cleanse the colon, give a boost to the immune system, detoxify the body, and prevent cancer. It is also proposed that alkaline water doesn’t only hydrate a person but also supports weight loss.
Small studies show that alkaline water can improve the delivery of oxygen-rich blood throughout the body. Hence, it can be suitable as a healthy post-workout drink. Some research also suggests that alkaline water has benefits of diabetics and that it can benefit those who have high blood pressure or high cholesterol markers. It may help get rid of acid reflux as well.
However, not much research has been carried out on alkaline water. A lot more of it is needed to confirm all the health benefits it claims it can provide.
Negative Side Effects Of Alkaline Water
The stomach’s acidity works to kill bacteria and keep harmful pathogens from entering the bloodstream. Alkaline water may lower this natural acid. Moreover, the alkaline nature of this water may cause metabolic alkalosis which has symptoms such as tremors, vomits, nausea, muscle tingling, and confusion.
Alkaline water may cause gastrointestinal problems and irritate the skin too. It can lower free calcium content which, in turn, can adversely impact bone health.
Should You Drink It Or Not?
Professionals are against alkaline water. This is because they believe manufacturers are only marketing by proposing that alkaline water comes with many health benefits. Not many studies have been done to speak in the favor of this water.
Artificial alkaline water’s overuse can cause mineral deficiencies. It can also contain contaminants and may prove to be harmful for health. Scientists recommend sticking to normal drinking water. Know that naturally alkaline water is mostly considered safe.
