A new study showed the potential of cherry juice in improving cognitive health among older adults. Your cognitive health refers to your ability of thinking with clarity, remembering and learning new things. Aging causes a decline in these abilities.
However, cognitive decline may also occur due to other reasons such as an unhealthy diet or lack of exercise. Certain health conditions such as hypertension, stroke, and diabetes as well as medications can cause a decrease in cognitive abilities.
Regarding the nutrition that is required for keeping your cognition sharp, a new study says that tart cherries can help. University of Delaware’s researchers have studied the effects of cherry juice on age-related cognitive decline.
Basically, the antioxidant properties of tart cherries can be of assistance. These come from the flavonoids that the plant contains naturally.
The Study – Can Cherries Improve Memory?
For the study, 37 people participated. These volunteers had normal cognitive functionality and were in the age bracket of 68 to 80. Moreover, they didn’t have any conditions or medications that could affect the brain’s working.
These participants were divided into two groups. The first group of 20 participants drank two cups of tart cherry juice every day for 12 weeks. The second group of 17 participants consumed placebo. The participants weren’t aware of which drink they were drinking due to similarity of both in color, flavor, etc.
Findings Of The Study
The research found that cherry juice improved cognition in the following ways:
- It increased subjective contentment with memory by 5%
- It reduced movement time by 4%
- The juice reduced episodic visual memory by 23%
- Visual sustained attention improved by 3%
- Errors in spatial memory working tasks reduced by 18%
Lead author of the study Sheau Ching Chai attributed these benefits of fruits to the bioactive compounds they contained. She further added that the benefits “may also be related to tart cherry’s potential blood pressure-lowering effects, outlined in a previous study we conducted in the same population, as blood pressure can influence blood flow to the brain.”
Limitations Of The Study
Though this study showed some promising results that cherries had on cognitive function, it was quite small. For drawing solid conclusions, we need a longer study comprising of more participants. Talking about the sugar content of cherry juice which can lead to weight gain and other problems, it is helpful to replace other sugar content with this juice’s intake.
It must also be noted that this study received funding from the industry. However, the funding party didn’t have any influence on it. The journal Food + Function published this study.
Can cherries improve your brain’s working? As per a new study, cherries may help reduce the cognitive decline linked with age. However, researchers need to conduct this study on a larger scale for confirm conclusions.
