A recent study published in the Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research journal said that drinking during pregnancy alters newborns’ genes. This research work also found that prenatal alcohol exposure increases cortisol in infants. The harmful beverage in the expecting mother’s blood is transported to the womb through the umbilical cord.
Previous studies have shown that any amount of alcohol during pregnancy ups the risk of stillbirth, miscarriage, etc. The CDC clearly warns, “There is no known safe amount of alcohol to drink while pregnant. There is also no known safe time during pregnancy or safe type of alcohol.” Alcohol is toxic for the brain of a developing baby and can cause birth defects and damage the brain.
Now a new research work says that booze companies encourage pregnant women to drink. The Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs has published this study.
Unclear Messages About Risks Of Alcohol During Pregnancy
Public health experts say that alcohol consumption during pregnancy shares a link with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Syndrome. According to this study, big booze companies are not giving too much weightage to the risks of alcohol use during pregnancy.
Researchers compared the say of public health bodies and government agencies to organizations funded by big alcohol firms. Scientists looked at the advice of companies from Ireland, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. They found that alcohol companies and their funded organizations were less likely to spread awareness about the risks of drinking when expecting.
Only some booze firms gave clear warnings. As per the team of scientists, the sales of booze companies are threatened if women abstain from drinking. It said, “This study provides further evidence that these organizations pose a potential risk to public health, specifically to the health of pregnant women and the baby, and should have no role in disseminating health information.”
Alcohol On The Whole
Alcohol doesn’t benefit your health regardless of your gender and age. It leads to weight gain, can cause pancreatitis, and can weaken your immune system. Research also shows a link between cardiovascular disease, stroke and alcohol intake. Most commonly, booze is known for its detrimental impacts on liver health.
The drawbacks of alcohol intake do not end here. In fact, alcohol can also make your gut suffer. It also disturbs mental health and causes brain-related problems. Just look at how foggy and weird the brain gets immediately when you are drunk.
If these are the short-term effects, long-term ones are way worse. Because alcohol consumption has become a massive issue, recently authorities announced that booze products should come with warning labels.
A new study has found that alcohol firms subtly push pregnant women to drink despite risks. Compared to public and governmental bodies, industry-funded organizations do not clearly warn pregnant women about risks of drinking.
