Consuming Tea Connected To Better Cognitive Performance, Says Study

Tea drinkers rejoice! A new research work has found that consuming tea is linked to better cognitive function. The Aging journal published this report in June this year. Accordingly, those who take their tea have more organized brain regions than those who do not. And brain organization shares a link with better cognitive working.

Researchers Dive Into The Benefits Of Tea For Cognition

Researchers at the National University of Singapore worked with the University of Essex and University of Cambridge for this study. The team of scientists found the first evidence that linked tea consumption to the structure of the brain. The paper discusses their finding that tea can protect against the decline in brain organization that occurs with age.

For the purpose of this study, researchers hired 36 adults who were either 60 or older. They collected participants’ data regarding their health, lifestyle as well as psychological well-being. Furthermore, participants also underwent neurological tests and MRI scans.

Scientists analyzed the cognitive performance of participants and their scans to find that those of them who took oolong, black or green tea four times a week minimum for a period of 25 years had more efficiently connected brain regions.

Explaining what this means for cognitive functioning, Asst Prof Feng, lead researcher of the study said, “when the connections between brain regions are more structured, information processing can be performed more efficiently.” The study started in 2015 and ended in 2018.

Previous Research On The This Link

Asst Prof Feng and his team conducted a longitudinal study on this before as well which was published in 2017. It showed that the daily intake of tea could drop the risk of cognitive decline by 50% among older adults.

This paper further solidifies the findings of their previous research. It shows “that the positive effects of regular tea drinking are the result of improved brain organisation brought about by preventing disruption to interregional connections.”

Next, the team plans to study the functionality of memories to find what can be done to better preserve cognitive working as a person ages. For this purpose, researchers are going to look at the effects of tea and its active compounds as well on cognition.
