9 Ways Too Much Exercise Affects Your Health

We’ve always heard and talked about the many health benefits that accompany exercise. However, too much of physical activity can actually cause more harm than good. This is why it is necessary to maintain moderation.

Wondering how exercising too much and for too long is bad for your body? Here are 9 ways over-exercising negatively impacts your health:

1 – Lagging Performance

If you are working out too much but your performance is lagging behind when you are cycling, swimming or doing another aerobic exercise, there is a high chance you are pushing your body too hard.

2 – Decrease In Energy

Exercise should make you feel physically and mentally active rather than drained. If you feel the opposite way, that is, fatigued after your workout sessions it would be a good idea to take things slowly and rest too.

3 – Muscle Soreness

Too much exercise can also make your muscles ache. This is because when you engage in a whole lot of strenuous physical activity, you tend to feel lazy as your body doesn’t get the time it needs to recover from the strain.

4 – Depression And Anxiety

While exercising is recommended for warding off anxiety and depression and for boosting one’s mood, too much of it can backfire. Research shows that when you work out for longer than 7.5 hours a week, it can adversely impact your mental health.

5 – Poor Heart Health

Another way over-exercising can backfire is that it can cause heart problems. Too much physical training can make you develop an irregular heart rhythm. For those who are already victims of cardiovascular issues, working out way too much can increase your risks of a stroke or a heart attack.

6 – Lowered Appetite

While working out more would require you to eat more, it can actually reduce your appetite. This is because when you exercise more than you should, your body gets fatigued. It tries to take down its workload by slowing down metabolism which causes fat buildup and a decrease in your appetite.

7 – Weakened Immunity

When you overstress your body with too much exercise, your immunity can weaken, and chronic inflammation can occur. A weak immune system makes you more susceptible to infections. On the other hand, chronic inflammation is linked to cancer, diabetes, heart disease, etc.

8 – Insomnia

Sleep and exercise can benefit one another. However, too much exercise only disrupts your sleep. It makes you feel restless which keeps you from falling asleep at night. This, in addition to muscle soreness and fatigue, can interfere in your daily activities.

9 – Joint Problems

Mild exercise is recommended for those who have osteoporosis or arthritis. However, even if your bones are perfectly fine, over-training can lead you to joint injuries. This, particularly, happens when you lift a lot of heavy weights in the gym.

To sum up, it is best to not exercise more than what your trainer recommends. Too much exercise makes your body do more work which only strains and drains it.
