10 Common Causes Of Depression

Depression can be explained by one’s lack of interest in almost everything. The mood disorder effects women more than men and has 300 million people in its hold, as per the World Health Organization. However, what is it that causes the mental ailment in the first place?

Here are 10 common causes of depression:

1 – Trauma and abuse

Going through a traumatic incident or abuse of any sort – psychological, emotional or physical, can take a toll on one’s mental health and develop into depression. Abuse that happens in childhood or adolescence can also cause depression in one’s adult years.

2 – Loss and grief

Losing a loved one can up one’s risk of depression. A study published in the Depression Research and Treatment journal says that spousal bereavement in the elderly can lead to depression and sleep problems. Therefore, losing a loved one is not mere grief, but it can be grief triggered depression.

3 – Conflict with loved ones

People who are vulnerable to developing depression anyways, may be led to it because of conflict with those with whom they are close to. Marital conflict, for example, can cause depressive symptoms to arise.

4 – Genetic tendency

Some people have a strong gene which is responsible for causing the mood disorder. This means that just because their family members have had depression, they are also likely to inherit the ailment from them.

5 – Stressful life changes

Though this is nowhere near normal, some people are affected by major life changes such as leaving their parents home, getting married, graduating, and other such events which lead to depression. Such depression is not normal which is why it must be acknowledged.

6 – Medications and medical conditions

Certain medications bring depression as a side effect. Moreover, some medical conditions such as heart attack, stroke, lupus, diabetes, etc. can also be accompanied by depression. This is why therapy is also considered for patients of these diseases.

7 – Poor diet

Lack of proper nutrition can also contribute to depression. For example, a diet that is too high in sugar can cause depression. When the levels of omega-3 and omega-6 are not in balance, this can also lead to depression. In fact, some vitamin and mineral deficiencies can cause depression too.

8 – Seasonal change

A change in the season can cause depression in some people, a condition which is termed as seasonal affective disorder or SAD. Many people start feeling sad in winter which can be explained by the change in their circadian rhythm because of more time spent indoors.

9 – Imbalance in brain chemistry

An imbalance in the chemistry of the brain can cause depressive symptoms too. This happens when the neurotransmitters of the brain are in an imbalance. These neurotransmitters, when short in supply, can cause the mood disorder.

10 – Hormonal fluctuations

Hormonal fluctuations are yet another cause of depression. Postnatal depression in women, for instance, can be explained by these fluctuations. Apart from childbirth, hormonal fluctuations due to menstruation can also chip in depression.
